It starts in Barcelona, but the real surprises are waiting further along the coast. In Cartagena, a Roman theatre that lay buried for centuries is now part of everyday city life, surrounded by cafés and narrow streets. A short journey across the Mediterranean brings you to Tangier, where the streets grow narrower, shopkeepers call from their doorways and the smell of fresh bread drifts from neighbourhood bakeries. Then the scenery changes completely. Out in the Atlantic, Madeira rises sharply from the sea, its green mountains dotted with villages and roads that seem to cling to the hillsides. With an overnight stay, there’s time to discover a little more of the island before heading back towards Spain. In Málaga, the afternoon might stretch into a long lunch of freshly grilled sardines beside the beach, while in Corsica, Ajaccio’s French cafés and colourful markets offer one last taste of Mediterranean life before arriving in Rome.
